Project Summary

We can make the kids at Willow Oaks in the Ravenswood School District excited to come to school by transforming their playground into a place where conflict is reduced and kids learn through play!

Project Description

Together we will transform the drab and desolate Willow Oaks blacktop, a place where children spend significant time each day, to a playground, where kids can learn through play! The playground is a place where children often begin to find their place in life and to develop relationships. At Playworks, we know that what happens at recess can affect a child's entire experience at school, in the classroom and in life. We want to bring out the best in every child! Help us to make the playground a place where children have a positive experience! We will paint multipurpose circles, four-square and game boundaries that get kids active and engaged, decrease conflict and support Playworks' mission and techniques for teaching safe, healthy and inclusive play.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 18, 2016 join Playworks staff, Americorps Volunteers, and community members as we transform Willow Oaks Elementary's playspace, making it a vibrant place to play and learn, using rollers, brushes and stencils. Our goal is to create a space that makes sense to the kids, a space that naturally reduces conflict and encourages children to participate with one another. We will do this together by adding distinguished four-square, tetherball, multi-purpose circle, basketball and soccer play areas. You will be a part of the transformation! We will take breaks to play games and enjoy snacks.

Help surpass our goal so we can paint another much-needed Ravenswood School playground! Any surplus will help us create a vibrant playground for 4 additional schools in the Ravenswood District.

Recess is most kids’ favorite subject in elementary school. When recess is fun, safe, active, and inclusive, kids get all of the physical, emotional, and social benefits of playing. Studies show that a colorful playground, with clear boundaries, visual guides, and obvious play spaces not only gets more kids playing, but keeps them playing. That's why we want to paint and transform all Playworks partner and training schools. Put a colorful, well thought out playground in the hands of our trained coaches, and the opportunities for our students are endless.

In just one afternoon, we can see tangible results, and transform the space together while building a sense of community!

More than 700 students attend this extremely low-income K-8 school. 96% of the children attending qualify for free and/or reduced lunch.  About 85% of students are Hispanic, 6% African American and 5% Pacific Islander. Before Playworks, many children were bullied. Recess could be chaotic. The current state of this Ravenswood District school's playground is sad and desolate, with limited game boundaries and faded lines. Without help from the outside community, Willow Oaks will not have the resources to transform the play area in a way that will help to reduce bullying and make kids happy to come to school!

Willow Oaks Elementary is at 620 Willow Road, Menlo Park, CA 94025.

With your generous donation, we will purchase brightly colored traffic paint, striping, brushes, rollers, and tools, plus tether balls, kickballs, soccer balls, jumpropes, frisbees and all the playground items needed for safe, healthy play. We also need YOU to help us make change happen on Monday, January 18th! Bring the family, and join us in our transformation. It's sure to be a fun and rewarding experience. Please join us! Email to find out how!

Playworks Northern California has led volunteer groups in painting over 31 playgrounds. Last year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we led over 80 volunteers to revitalize the playground at Brentwood Academy, another Ravenswood District School. See the difference it makes in the photos below!
