Project Summary

Foster Youth can't afford to pay their way to this transformational leadership event. Help us make sure their voices are heard. For every $1000 raised, another youth has the opportunity to attend.

Project Description

About the Conference
Leaders for Change is the annual conference of Foster Youth in Action (FYA), the only national organization connecting independent, grassroots youth-led groups organizing to improve the foster care system in the U.S. Seven years running, this conference is held in our nation’s capital and welcomes at least 100 youth from more than 25 states.
At this conference, youth participants will:
1) Learn and practice vital leadership skills:
2) Build connections with other young leaders from at least 25 states; and
3) Advocate with elected officials and federal administrators on the key issues facing foster youth in this nation.
What Foster Youth Take Back
Foster Youth repeatedly tell us that they head home from the conference more motivated and prepared to take action to improve foster care in their home communities. Don't just take our word for's what they have to say!
This experience was fantastic and I learned so much and met so many great and talented individuals that now more than ever, I am convinced that i have brothers and sisters all over the United States standing up to improve a broken child welfare system.  -- 2016 Conference Youth Participant
The conference made a huge Impact on me and my decisions on life and how I want to move forward. -- 2015 Conference Youth Participant
When I first attended the Leaders for Change Conference I didn’t know what to expect. This conference brought me out of my shell and gave me the confidence to take on more leadership roles. -- 2016 Conference Youth Participant
The Conference inspired and motivated our youth leaders to take action back home. They gained new tools and passion they are now using to launch their own state campaign to improve the rights of siblings in foster care. FYA is not just a great conference but a launching pad for powerful local action!  --  Kim Lemcke, Adult ally with the Minnesota Youth Leadership Councils and 2016 Conference Adult Participant

About the Organizer
My name is Jacob and I’ve been a part of Leaders for Change since 2015 by helping plan both conferences. I love that this event is organized by youth, for youth! I’m a long-time advocate and youth leader, both nationally and in my home state of Iowa. I’ve seen firsthand the powerful impacts of this event and am excited to replicate that again this year for youth who are just learning to find their voice. One youth scholarship costs about $1,000 so our goal is to help send 20 more youth to this year’s conference through this campaign. I hope you’ll help us reach our goal by October 1!
About Foster Youth in Action
Foster Youth in Action believes in the power of the foster youth voice. Founded by California Youth Connection in 2008, Foster Youth in Action (FYA) organizes a national grassroots network of foster youth-led groups through training, leadership opportunities, shared learning, and advocacy. Now with 23 current and pending partners, FYA’s network represents more than 80% of all foster youth in care nationwide. FYA is the only national organization raising up and connecting independent, grassroots groups fighting to secure rights and opportunities that current and former foster youth deserve.
